Cayman Brac - Jerk Chicken

Barry's Golden Jerk Chicken, Cayman Brac, March, 2010

If you are ever in Cayman Brac you must try Barry's Golden Jerk Chicken. Open only Wednesday, Friday and Saturday nights it features some of the tastiest chicken we have ever tasted. Golden Jerk is easy to find - follow your nose and look for lots of smoke billowing from the Bar-b-que.  I hope the following photos capture the mood.

Cayman Brac - Yellow Tube Sponge & Diver

Yellow tube sponge and diver, Cayman Brac, March 2010

Not sure if it was the camera setting or what, but everytime I took a photo of yellow tube sponges many times they looked almost fake. It must be just the way the flash illuminates the yellow sponge against the blue background.

Cayman Brac - Nurse Shark

Nurse shark with remora, Cayman Brac, March, 2010

Mick our boat captain/divemaster said to keep our eyes open for nurse sharks on this dive. Two sharks could be reliably be found at this site in the past, but they had not been seen for awhile. Tracey and I were first in the water and began our search, checking numerous overhangs and small caves. I stuck my head in one small opening and gulped as my eyes focused on the distinctive tail fin just in front of me. Backing out of the opening I signaled "shark" to Tracey and swam around to the other side of the coral head to see if I could get a better look. A larger opening to the cave revealed one tail, one head, another tail?!? THREE large nurse sharks were stacked in the hole like cord wood.

Cayman Brac - Jellyfish

Jellyfish
Cayman Brac, March, 2010

Had a very hard time getting a decent photo of this jellyfish swimming just under the surface. Waves bounced and rolled me around, the strobe kept popping in and out of the water and the camera couldn't focus on the nearly transparent creature. This is the best pic of the bunch. I think I'd like to go back and try again.

Cayman Brac - A teaser

Here is a teaser photo from our recent trip to Cayman Brac. Many more to come.

All the photos you will see of this year's trip are taken on my new Canon G11. For underwater shots it was housed in an Ikelite housing with a DS51 substrobe. What a great little camera especially for a "point & shoot" style. Won't give up my SLR just yet, but loved having this in my pocket ready to take a picture whenever something caught my eye. Also, for the price, the underwater system rocked!
